Build Day is TOMORROW!

Well this is it, go time! Build Day begins at 8am tomorrow, rain or shine (but let's all say a prayer tonight for some shine okay?). If you are volunteering with us tomorrow, thank you so much, it is going to be a great day! If you couldn't make it to volunteer, please join us by watching online at www.ltbk.ca. If you are watching, be sure to sned us a note to cheer us on!

Build Day t-shirts will be available tomorrow, $10 a shirt and are available in adult and child sizes. All proceeds go directly to the playground fund.

If you are a volunteer, don't forget to bring your waiver form, filled out but not signed, with you in the morning. We will have some extra if anyone who hasn't registered arrives, or if anyone forgets.

That's it for now, my next update will have pictures of the new "Twillingate Playground of Memories". Tomorrow is going to be a day we will never forget.

Only 2 Days to Build Day! Equipment has arrived!

It was a very exciting evening as volunteers gathered to unload the playground and fitness park equipment.   A huge thank you to the Twillingate Volunteer Fire Department who came out to help with this task.  Also, a special thanks to Byron Rogers and Derrick Warren who have spent many hours over the last couple weeks preparing the groundwork for Build Day!

3 Sleeps 'til Build Day! We need your help!

Can you believe it? Our Build Day is only days away! It is going to be such an awesome day. Just a few notes to update you all.

- We are in need of some supplies to help make Build Day a success. There is a complete list below, but some items, such as wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, etc. are needed in large amounts, so please if you can bring one or more do so on Saturday. Ask around to neighbors, families and friends as well, they may not be able to be there on Saturday but can help out in this way. It would be very much appreciated!

- A more complete schedule of events will be posted within the next couple days, but for now here is a quick run down of what is going to happen on Saturday.
  • 8:00am Registration and assignment of tasks, playground build begins.
  • 10:00am Children's activities begin at the ballfield (or stadium is weather is not favorable). Please remember that all children younger than 4 must be accompanied by a caregiver 16 years old or older to participate. The YMCA and Twillingate Recreation Committee have been working together to plan a fun day for the kids, and of course we want as many kids there as possible to open the playground!
  • 11:30am Lunch break begins. Volunteers will be assigned a colored group to make this run smoothly, details to come on Build Day.
  • 1:00pm Playground build resumes.
  • 3:00pm Opening Ceremonies (group photo will be taken before the opening ceremonies).

13 days until BUILD DAY! A big thank you to Glenn Mitchell for his fudnraising efforts!

Glenn Mitchell works in Norman Wells, NWT but lives here in Twillingate
with his wife and son, Andrew.  Andrew told his dad about the walk-a-thon
to help raise money for the new playground and Glenn thought it was a
great idea.  Glenn, who was away working at the time decided that he would
try his best to raise some money for the playground as well.  Glenn talked
to people he worked with from all the different companies in Norman Wells
and in the end he raised a total of $1110.00 for the walk-a-thon.

Scotiabank Canada Day Garden Party a HUGE Success!!!

It was a Happy Canada Day for children and adults of all ages who came out to the Scotiabank garden party.  Despite the weather, which forced the “Garden Party” to be held in the stadium, it still received great support from the people of our great community and visitors alike.  It was a wonderful day of fun, food and socialization.  A HUGE thank you to Manager, Lucy Jenkins and her employees of the Scotiabank, Twillingate Branch who have spent many weeks planning activities to make this event successful in a BIG way!  Many of the day’s activities included; a fish pond, cake walk, PLINKO, dunk tank, barbecue hot dogs and hamburgers, popcorn and cotton candy booth, face painting, just to name a few.  Also, thanks are being sent out to a number of people who helped the Scotiabank employees, these include, Ross Gambin the Manager of Twillingate Save Easy and his employees who provide the barbecue supplies and served during the day, Twillingate Lions and Leo clubs for running the popcorn and cotton candy booth and all individuals who donated cakes for the cake walk, and helped out with the activities, especially those who volunteered to be dunked into the cold water of the dunk tank.  The grand total for the day’s event was $4445.00 but it still gets better, this money was matched through team Scotia community program becoming a fundraising event with a total of $8890.00.  Awesome job everyone!

Photo Shoot Fundraiser

Over the month of June, I had the opportunity to "play photographer" and raise money for the playground at the same time. Thank you to everyone who participated, I really enjoyed the experience and I hope you are all happy with your photos. As a result of your support, I was able to raise $500 for the playground! Below is a short video I made, highlighting just some of the photos taken. Hope you enjoy.

Lemonade for Sale!

Caitlin Gillard, Evan Greenham, and Lekeisha Greenham decided to do some fundraising on their own with all proceeds going to the Twillingate Playground and Fitness Park. On June 27, they decided to have a lemonade sale at the Top of Twillingate Trail, and later that day Evan contacted Grant White to inform him that he would be bringing him some money. Shortly after the conversation all three showed up at the door with their bag of money, a total of $21.74. What an awesome Lemonade Sale. When matched by Let Them Be Kids, this is doubled to $43.48. Thanks guys!!

WHEN: June 1st , 2011

WHY: We need to raise approx. $75,000 before our playground build day on August 6th, 2011!

Details: On June 1st , different groups throughout Twillingate will participate in a walk-a-thon to raise money for our Community Playground/Fitness Park. Dot-Mocracy

Today we held our Dot-Mocracy to allow the children of our community to "vote" on which playground equipment they would like to see in our new playground. The results will be compiled and used to create a design for the playground we will build on August 6th. We should have the first design in about 3 or 4 days. When we get the design, we will of course share it with all of you, but for now, here are a few pictures of our "Dot-Mocracy" from today.

First fundraiser was a success (and other good news)!

Our first fundraiser took place this past Saturday morning. We held a breakfast with the Easter Bunny for everyone in town. We had a great turn out and raised around $1400! With our 50/50 match from Let Them Be Kids we have $2800 in purchasing power for new playground and fitness park equipment. Wow! It was a wonderful morning, and lots of smiles (although some tears as well) from kids when they got to meet the Easter Bunny. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the morning:

In other news, we currently have 264 volunteers signed up for our Build Day on August 6th! This is incredible! A big thank you to all who have signed up so far, and if you haven't had a chance to register yet, please do! Many hands make light work, and everyone will have a job to do on Build Day to be successful. Just click the link on the right hand side of this page and fill in your information, that way you will receive bi-weekly updates on our progress until the big day arrives.

I also wanted to make mention of the fact that not only has Twillingate been selected to receive a Let Them Be Kids Helping Hands Award, we have also been chosen as one of only 4 communities across Canada that will have their Build Day featured in a documentary that will be screened at the Toronto Film Festival as well as the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary, Let Them Be Kids: Building Playgrounds, Inspiring Hope will highlight our efforts throughout the coming months as we fund-raise and rally volunteers to help us build a new playground and fitness park for our town. What a great moment for Twillingate! We should be proud of our little town! We have accomplished so much so far, and the best is yet to come!
